The most impressive thing called Conwy is the town itself

Llechwedd Slate Caverns.

Discover the unique heritage of Welsh Slate

Llechwedd Slate Caverns of Blaenau Ffestiniog is part of a living, working slate mine still being worked to this day by Greaves Welsh Slate - since 1836.

We offer 2 unique underground tours that take you deep underground to explore the world of the Victorian slate miner. The temperature underground is an ambient 54F making the caverns ideal for a family day out - come rain or shine.

Plenty of all year surface facilities to enjoy - shop, cafe, slate workshop (with daily demonstrations) plus the Victorian Village (April-September) with its traditional tavern and old fashioned sweet shop.

The Miners' Tramway Tour:

Ride on a train into a network of spectacular cathedral high manmade chambers.

This is a guided tour and at various points you will learn of the skills needed to extract slate, and to experience for yourself the sights and sounds of late nineteenth century mining conditions.
